How can my website rank higher in search engine results?
We hear this question a lot. And although there are thousands of websites out there who are willing to explain how to rank higher, it’s not always clear. How your website and it’s pages rank with search engines has a lot to do with Search Engine Optimization or SEO. First of all, what is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?
According to Wikipedia, it “is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a web search engine’s unpaid results – often referred to as “natural”, “organic”, or “earned” results.”
In plain English, when a person searches the phrase:
“water damage restoration company, Madison WI”
– the search engine will provide results based on websites or web pages containing those search terms (also referred to as Keywords) in the section listed underneath the Paid Advertisements and Map, which is referred to as the Organic Results.
Sounds pretty simple, right? Well, not exactly…
You’d think that by inserting those search terms into your website and web pages that you’re done! But there’s another hitch – – search engine’s also tell us that to get the most out of Search Engine Optimization or SEO, the content or information you have on your website or web pages should be refreshed regularly.
Okay, so what does refreshing content regularly mean?
Well, it means something different for every company and industry. For example, a Restoration Company would explain the definition of the three Categories of water losses on their Water Damage web page. The definitions aren’t going to change a whole lot (unless the S500 revises them) so to keep changing that area of your website or web page is not efficient. BUT! You could write blog articles explaining what a Category 2 water loss is or how you could prevent a Category 2 water loss.
The article would contain many search terms that people would use to find YOUR business. Continuing with the Category 2 water loss example from above, you’d include terms such as: dishwasher cracked fitting, washing machine overflow, toilet overflow (but only for #1 –hoping you get my terrible humor!), etc. Then you’d add in your location(s) and any other search terms that are relevant to your business and services.
You post the blog article in your website and BAM!!
The search engines now have a new page of fresh content or Search Engine Optimization or SEO search terms that they can Crawl and Index for people searching for your services.
So how many blog articles could you come up with? Articles about the services you do, the various terms your industry uses and how you can use those terms to educate your customers, and to keep content and your website pages fresh? A lot I’m guessing!!
Start simple, use this 3 Step SEO Checklist to get the process going.
3 Step SEO Checklist:
- Write down all of the different ways people would search for your services. HINT HINT!! You have to step out of being you! Keep in mind that people don’t normally search “mitigation” they’d most likely search “restoration” or “damages” or “clean up”.
- Go through your current website and insert the search terms that you listed on the relevant pages. Don’t go overboard, the content and articles have to make sense and should be easy to read.
- Start a Blog page! Use the list of search terms, various industry definitions, and how-to’s for educating your customers or audience. Be consistent, try to post at least one new article of content per week.
